A high-performance, multifunctional backer board system from China's HN Company provided an efficient, reliable, and eco-friendly solution for upgrading bathrooms at an operational boutique hotel, overcoming the distinct challenges of Zermatt’s high-altitude climate.
The "Alpine Light" hotel, situated in the car-free, eco-conscious resort of Zermatt, combines traditional Swiss chalet architecture with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. To elevate guest experience while meeting Switzerland’s exacting standards for quality and sustainability, the hotel initiated a full upgrade of all 45 guest bathrooms. The project encountered three main challenges:
Climate and Environment: Zermatt’s high altitude, significant daily temperature swings, and long, cold winters demand exceptional weather resistance, anti-condensation performance, and waterproofing from building materials. Moisture intrusion risked causing irreversible damage to the hotel’s valuable wooden structure.
Operations and Schedule: With the hotel operating year-round, renovations were confined to short low-season windows. Each bathroom required an extremely fast turnaround to minimize disruption, making traditional wet-construction methods with lengthy drying times unfeasible.
Quality and Eco-Friendliness: The new bathrooms had to meet luxury standards, and all materials needed to comply with strict Swiss environmental regulations, ensuring healthy indoor air quality.
After thorough research, the project team selected an integrated dry-construction system centered on HN Company’s innovative cement-based multifunctional backer board, moving away from traditional multi-layer waterproofing that is more vulnerable to workmanship and climate conditions.
Substrate Preparation and Precision Installation: Following the removal of old finishes and leveling of the existing walls, large-format (1200mm x 2400mm) reinforced cement backer boards from HN were mechanically fixed directly to the walls using precision Swiss fasteners. This created a stable, moisture-proof, and mold-resistant substrate quickly.
Sealing Joints and Critical Details: Board joints, internal and external corners, and pipe penetrations were sealed with a high-quality, anti-mold modified silane polymer sealant. The entire shower area received an additional application of a flexible liquid waterproof membrane, forming a reliable dual-protection barrier alongside the inherent properties of the HN board.
Efficient Finish Application: Large-format tiles were installed directly onto the prepared HN board substrate using the thin-bed method. The flat, rigid base ensured a flawless finish. When mounting sanitary ware, the high screw withdrawal resistance of the HN boards provided significantly greater stability than traditional drywall.
Exceptional Durability and Protection: The HN backer board system effectively prevents moisture intrusion, safeguarding the hotel’s building structure. Its high impact and deformation resistance ensure the bathrooms remain in like-new condition over the long term, making it well-suited to the harsh Alpine environment.
Significant Gains in Construction Efficiency: The dry-construction process was largely unaffected by low temperatures and high humidity, cutting the renovation time per bathroom from a projected two weeks to just five days. This dramatically reduced operational impact for the hotel and guaranteed the project stayed on schedule.
Enhanced Sustainability Standards: The selected HN boards contain no harmful substances, complying with top Swiss and EU environmental standards and contributing to a healthy indoor guest environment. Their long service life also minimizes future repair waste, aligning with Swiss sustainability values.
A Foundation for Luxury Experience: The extremely level walls created an ideal base for high-end tiles and fixtures. The finished bathrooms are not only luxurious in appearance but also fully reliable in function, earning strong approval from both the hotel management and guests.
The "Alpine Light" hotel project demonstrates that for high-end Swiss construction demanding ultimate quality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility, the integrated backer board system from China's HN Company is a strategic choice for bathroom renovations. It successfully addressed the technical challenges of a demanding environment while embodying the core Swiss principles of precision, reliability, and sustainability. This project sets a new benchmark for similar renovations in the Alpine region and beyond, showing how HN Company’s advanced technology and reliable products can help high-end construction projects worldwide achieve excellence.
